License to drone

Taking a drone along on a trip to Cuba is unwise: the best case scenario is that it will be returned to you politely as you leave. Those interested in filming Cuba from above need to find a state-licensed drone operator there. We proudly introduce you to two partners of ours who have managed just that.

Let’s fess up: when we think of Cuba, images of fat cigars, vintage American cars and musicians of advanced years spring to mind. Oh, and maybe beaches – we are talking about a Caribbean island, after all. But miles and miles of vineyards? Thickly forested mountainsides? Green meadows dotted with spotted cows? Our aerials from Medienkontor and Berlin Producers show previously hidden sides of the caiman-shaped island and make viewers long to dive headlong into their scenes.

That aerials from Cuba are rare is unsurprising: securing filming permits isn’t easy anywhere, but getting permission to shoot (and particularly to shoot aerial footage!) presents notorious challenges in Cuba. Only a single enterprise on the island is licensed to fly drones, and all filmmakers need to work through this sole contractor. All the more reason for you to dodge time-consuming bureaucratic procedures and simply help yourself to whatever you need from our shop. Which naturally also has “grounded” footage featuring cigars, vintage cars and musicians. (  "Cuba").

We wish you a pleasant flight through our archive.

F****** – Footage is no longer a dirty word

WORK OF THE MONTH

50 years ago, four British men with moptops packed the biggest concert halls in the world and sent fans into frenzies. Ron Howard’s cinema documentary “The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years” is full of surprising and previously unknown scenes that are well worth watching and packed with painstakingly restored concert recordings – thanks to footage, not least from Framepool!

Good to know – using famous personalities

DENTAL CARE THE CLOONEY WAY

“Stars are public persons, so using footage of them is fine.” True or false? The law on using footage of persons of public interest is ambiguous even in such tightly-regulated countries as Germany. Different spheres of law intersect here: freedom of opinion and press freedoms collide with privacy and publicity rights. But a rule of thumb can be derived from the numerous cases which have arisen:

When images or audio from people who have become famous because of their status, office, talents or exploits (such as politicians, artists, actors, or sportspeople) are used in the context in which the individuals in question have reached prominence, the public interest in information is generally valued more highly than the right of individuals to privacy. George Clooney and his wife walking on a red carpet could legitimately be used (in an editorial context) to illustrate the topic of George Clooney as an actor. But if the same material was intended for use in an advertising context, say to suggest that George Clooney has a preference for a particular toothpaste, Mr. Clooney could raise objections. He would most certainly be in a position to raise objections if a marital row captured on camera by chance were to be shared with a wider audience (private sphere!) But if the marital row just so happened to take place on the red carpet – well, that would be a different story again.
